Read the number
Lower numbers mean coarser abrasiveness. Higher numbers mean finer abrasiveness. Pressure, technique, and the condition of the nail also affect how much material you remove.
A quick reference
80 and 100 are coarse grits generally reserved for enhancement work, not natural-nail preparation. 150 is a medium-coarse option for suitable enhancement tasks. 180 is finer and may be suitable for some natural free-edge shaping. 240 is finer still. Follow the product system and training guidance for the specific task.
Use the least aggressive effective option
Inspect the surface as you work. A finer file can still cause damage if used with excessive pressure or repeated passes. Shape the free edge with control and avoid unnecessarily thinning the plate.
